The following outreach initiatives were implemented by the Virgin Islands Public Television System during this reporting period:

A. Internship Program The System offered learning opportunities to a total of seven students within the three internship categories available; Apprenticeship, Career Exploration, and Summer Employment. The Apprenticeship program accommodated two (2) high school students; The Career Exploration program exposed one (1) student to the key areas of the television industry in one day and Summer Employment was provided to four (4) students in the areas of production, engineering, human resources, and programming.

.1. Apprenticeship – Two (2) students from the local high schools received on- the-job training opportunities. During the internship, the students were given the opportunity to obtain hands on experience in our programming and production departments while being mentored by employees at the System.

2. Career Exploration - One (1) high school student participated in the Scout Career Exploration Day in which WTJX partnered with the Boy Scouts of America. The student observed the System’s employees within the executive and production divisions.  He also was exposed to various opportunities available in broadcasting.  

3. Summer Employees- The System offered opportunities to three (3) high school students and one (1) college student to receive exposure in the broadcasting industry, specifically, engineering, production, human resources, and the programming departments.

4.  Career Fairs – The System participated in three career fairs and provided information to elementary and junior high school students about various careers in the broadcasting industry.  Exhibits were set up that allowed students to obtain first hand knowledge and exposure to the technology and equipment used in the production departments. Additionally, the System participated in a career fair offered by the Virgin Islands Department of Labor that allowed the System to showcase information about its service and provide the public with information about employment opportunities in broadcasting.

B. Career Development Training Program The System continues to encourage employees at all levels to develop the core skills necessary for success and advancement within their specific areas. As a result, training sessions ranging from short in-house workshops to one-day off site seminars, and even at times, intense off-island courses/ conferences were provided. Some areas of training include:

      • Managing Multiple Projects, Objectives and Deadlines training was provided to staff in order to learn about time management, productivity and project planning techniques;
      • Customer Service Skills training was provided to staff in order to learn about communicate and customer service skills when dealing with various types of customers (internal and external);
      • Editing training was provided to video editors to enhance editing skills for promotional opportunities and advancement;
      • Audio and Engineering training was provided to members of the production department on the use of the microwave, server and audio control system as part of the System’s succession planning training for employees;
      • Protrack training was provided to employees in various departments to promote cross training throughout the System and provide opportunities for employees to learn about the application;
      • Human Resources training was provided to administrative professionals to provide professional development opportunities and exposure to various employment labors and practices;
      • Leadership Development and Teambuilding training was provided to staff members, it consisted of sessions about communication, problem solving, and the performance evaluation system; and
      • Sundance training was provided to the transmitter engineering staff.
      C. Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination.

      1. Workplace/Sexual Harassment Training – All employees including Managers and Supervisors received training on the nature of harassment in the workplace and learned about the policies in place to prevent workplace harassment.  Additionally, employees received information on recognizing the signs of workplace and sexual harassment, the proper reporting procedure and the investigation process used
