What is All Digital Talk?
By now you have probably heard about Digital Television (DTV) and High Definition Television (HDTV), but like most people you may still be unfamiliar with the purpose of this evolution in the television industry. The Digital Television era we are embarking upon means changes in the way the Virgin Islands Public Television System (WTJX) will broadcast and how you will view programs. These changes are being made because of new rules that have been adopted by the Federal Communications Commission in television transmission. These new rules are requiring WTJX and other broadcasters to convert to digital transmission by December 2006, otherwise the stations, to include WTJX would cease to exist. Digital television has already begun to be transmitted in major metropolitan areas. WTJX-TV is no exception, as we are presently transmitting over four digital channels. However, we are not presently producing in digital.
You may be wondering……..what exactly is digital television? Well, digital television or DTV will significantly improve television picture quality and increase WTJX’s services over the air.
Like computers, which use zeros and ones, digital television will capture and transmit images and sounds in this same manner. Already, almost all electronic data is being transmitted digitally including computers, photography, print telephone services and audio.
The main features of digital television are definition television, multi-casting, and data transmission. High definition television will provide sharper images giving you a picture similar to what you find at a movie theater screen, compact disc quality sound and a perfect reception. |
